POTA is an international award program that encourages amateur radio operators to take their gear out of the home shack and into the wild. It turns public parks into temporary radio stations, promoting both the hobby and our beautiful public lands.
The community is split into two main roles (and many operators do both!):
Activators: The portable operators who pack up their transceivers, batteries, and temporary antennas, head into a designated park, and set up a station to make contacts.

Hunters: The operators sitting comfortably at home (or in their mobile rigs) trying to “hunt” down the activators and log a contact with them in the park.
🔍 The Rules are Simple
The structure is straightforward, which is exactly why it’s so popular:
To successfully activate a park, an operator must make at least 10 unique contacts (QSOs) during their stay.
Contacts can be made using any amateur radio band and any mode—whether that’s traditional voice (SSB), Morse code (CW), or digital modes like FT8 and FT4.
Everything is tracked via an online leaderboard, where both activators and hunters can earn certificates, clean up awards, and track their stats over time.

❓ Why Do People Love It?
1. Emergency Preparedness: It forces you to build a highly efficient, portable “go-kit.” If you can set up a station on a picnic table in 15 minutes and log contacts across the country using battery power, you’re ready for real-world deployment when the grid goes down.
2. The Community: POTA is incredibly welcoming. Hunters are always eager to help an activator get their 10 contacts, and it’s a fantastic way to introduce curious park passersby to the magic of radio.
3. The Challenge: Leaving the comfort of a permanent home antenna means dealing with the elements, managing battery life, and learning how to optimize portable antennas like vertical whips or wire dipoles on the fly.
Whether you’re looking to get some fresh air with your rig or want to chase some rare state parks from the comfort of your own desk, POTA is a phenomenal way to play radio.
